MP 5,1 -Won't boot up with black screen and continuous chime

Hi! My Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010 has been running fairly well recently, apart from an issue where I cannot seem to get it to upgrade past OS X 10.13.4, Boot ROM version MP51.0089.B00, over the last few months.
But the other day, after I powered it up and was on it for about five minutes, the screen suddenly went grey with thin white lines running horizontally across it, then it powered itself down after about 30 seconds and immediately tried to power itself on again, only this time unsuccessfully...

Vega 64 MacOs 10.14.5 Resume from Sleep issues

So I have a Mac Pro 5,1. I added a sapphire vega 64 limited edition (its silver) and the display reliably won't wake from sleep if left there for more than about 6 hours. Such as, encoding something over night.

I can still ssh into the machine but I can't get the display to come up no matter how many times I unload/reload/kill the WindowServer. It can't talk to the gpu for some reason. Sapphire has already replaced the card with a brand new unit so I'm sure its not a hardware problem.

I...

updating a Mac (Pro)s CPU Microcode

I Just wanted to make a Quick posting that I managed to update the Microcode on my MacBook2,1 to the latest version intel has released for its CPU :)

I managed to do this by dumping my MacBooks BootROM using flashrom in Linux and actually manually finding the microcode in the BootROM (which in this case is 4096 Bytes long/big) and taking the updated microcode and replacing the old microcode with the new version, I then flashed the now edited BootROM onto the MacBooks BootROM flash chip...

Hi, Everyone, so my video editing company is in the market for a desktop. It has to be a mac as they are adament on it. What's throwing me off is that the Mac Pro is still $1400 with six-year old tech. I found one with the six core xeon and a d300 for $1400. This is the can design. Is there anything more economical or with better specs for the price? I also saw a barebones 2012 Mac Pro tower with the 3.46 GHZ Xeon. Would it be smarter to grab that one and customize it myself? I am just...

Orange lights from graphics card or otherwise inside MacPro?

I’ve had serious MacPro problems for sometime. Just search my name here and you’ll see a lot of problems. As always, I’m trying track them down. I’m on Mojave, SSD on a PCIe blade. MacPro5,1 3.46gz from a 2009 2.28.

Right now things kind of work generally, but some audio applications are wack.

I’ve noticed that after upgrading to Mojave, and the graphic card, I see orange lights shooting from inside the computer. Looks like a war. The Mac is in the back so I don’t notice it, until I have...

Hello,

I recently acquired an old Mac Pro 1,1 and have been trying to update it to version 2,1 in order to facilitate better processors, but after trying nearly everything I can think of I am still unable to perform the update.

As I have done so much it will be neater if I post it in bullets:

AMD Radeon RX 5700

With the launch of the Radeon RX 5700, AMD has delivered an updated card that appears to work within the 4,1 / 5,1 cMP's power capabilities,(75 watts - PCIe slot, 75 watts - PCIe aux1, 75 watts PCIe aux 2) without having to make the power supply mod.

Are there any NAVI based drivers lurking in Mojave? Or is this next generation of graphics hardware destined to be supported only in Catalina?...

Hi,

I tried out 4k monitor in the early days of the MacPro 6.1 and it wasn't properly supported.
I'm checking out this monitor and wonder if it is fully supported on the Mac Pro 6.1?

thanks

I'm creating a thread for my 4.1-->5.1 mod to keep everything in one place.

I will document my upgrade to X5690, PCIe SSD (Apple SSUBX) and PSU mod to allow for two modern gfx cards using only the internal PSU.

I have gotten my Mac Pro now (2x 2.26GHz) 4.1 from 2009. It had one Nvidia 120GT and one Nvidia 8800GT, 12GB ram and a few external scratches =) Price was $680 in March 2015.

I have ordered de-lidded X5690 CPUs that are being delivered. ($599 for package with dual de-lidded CPUs...

Let me pre-empt anyone who is quick to jump to the process of "reset PRAM" as the answer to the title. Been there, done that. Didn't work.

So let me set up the situation (read: long story) before I get to my problem.

Part 1
I am the proud owner of a MacPro3,1 that I bought second hand and have owned it since 2013. The machine came originally with the HD2600XT (DVI). I swapped in a Radeon 6870, not flashed, and also purchased an Apple LED Display (miniDP, not thunderbolt). The...

Graphics Card problem

I’m currently running a radeon r9-280x cardvin my flashed 2009/2010 5,1 machine.
It’s a 12 core machine.
Trying to install high Sierra to go on to Mojave so I put a GT120 card in the machine.
I’m getting a grey Apple screen with a progress bar that stops at the halfway mark and then everything goes blank.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

About to purchase a Mac Pro need input

Hello, so I am in the market for a Mac desktop to run video editing and 3D rendering along with AutoCAD and bootcamp. I have the option of an upgraded Mac Tower or Can or a Mac Mini. My problem is that is it even wise to spend that much money on seven year old tech. The 2019 Mac Pro is out of my budget, and I do not like the iMac design at all. Let me know if there are any alternatives I haven't covered either
Here are my options

Hello all,
I want to start by saying thank you for all the wonderful knowledge shared here.
My upgrade journey for my cMP starts soon and I was wondering what the correct order of upgrades would be.

To start, I have a 2010 with two CPU trays and the HD 5870. The items I have to upgrade are the following:
Sapphire RX 580
Two X5690 processors
96GB of Ram
NVMe SSD with PCIe card
eSata card with enclosure
BCM943602CDP card with V3 adapter

My plan is to upfrade to High Sierra, get all the...

Ethernet Slow on local network

The ethernet connection on my 5,1 is slow when trying to share to another mac locally. I attempted a clean install of 10.14.6, PRAM reset, booted into a 10.13.5 OS. I've tried both ethernet ports. I'm the original owner and this issue just recently appeared, I haven't installed anything new besides the 10.14.6 update. I Unplugged the cable and plugged the ethernet cable into my macbook pro 2017 running 10.14.6 and was able to get normal speeds to my other shared Mac ruling out the cable or a...

Speculating about an xMac's future.

So, many months ago, I speculated that "rethinking the Mac Pro" would be really rethinking, & the mMP would be an all-in on PCI, including putting the standard IO on a PCI card (apart from ethernet in the actual machine?), to which the "Apple is all about minimalism and simplicity and would never do that" folks reacted as expected, and lo and behold, Apple gave us the slottiest slotbox they've ever made - hell, it's more slot-centric than your average slotbox PC as far as I can see....

How long will a Mac Pro purchased in early 2018 be supported?

$

I'm just curious, since they dropped support for the 2012 Mac Pro in Catalina, so that's 8 years of updates.

A Mac Pro bought today, was effectively created in 2013, so will next year's MacOS update be the last for that machine?

I'm thinking that the CPU might be safe, because even the 7,1 Mac Pro wasn't ARM after all. ;)

But 2 or 3gb of VRAM might perhaps become an issue to keep it alive. Does Apple sell any other Mac with so little VRAM?

How long will the 2013 Mac Pro get software updates?

I found a completely spec'd out Mac Pro 12 Core / 64GB Ram / 1TB SSD / 2x D700 or whatever graphics cards for $2,200. It seems like a steal unless there's something i'm missing. Will this machine still get software updates for a couple years?
