Does memory has to match exactly?

$

0
I have 12GB in my system and wanted to add 4GB more so I got one.
But the system does not recognize the memory and shows slot as empty.

I have 4GB 2Rx4 PC3-8500R-7-10-JP (3 of this) and
the new one I got is 4GB 2Rx4 PC3-8500R-7-10-E1. the only difference is E1 and all others are same. Is this the problem?

or do I have defective memory?

(MP 1,1) ATI Radeon 2600XT with Mtn. Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite---Would it work well?

Hi everyone,

I have asked several people this question but have gotten mixed answers, so I thought I would make a whole thread to help narrow things down.

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 with two cards. My main card is an ATI 2600XT (taken from a 2008 8-core Mac Pro), and the original GT 7300 for extra displays.

I currently run Snow Leopard on my machine, but I wanted to load either Mtn. Lion, Mavericks, or POSSIBLY Yosemite on it, with one of those custom-install guides floating around on the internet. Many have successfully been able to install these operating systems on their unsupported Macs; HOWEVER, my 2600XT card is a little questionable. I have heard people say that anything past Snow Leopard on one is either finicky, slow, or both... I have also heard people say that it would be fine, considering a supported, older iMac with a lesser card can run any of these three operating systems just fine.

So, what do you guys think? I am guessing the 7300 is out of the question, but what about my 2600XT? Would things run fine or what? Is it not really about ability but rather compatibility? Are there any out there who have had experience with running one of these operating systems in a Mac Pro that has this card?

Thanks,

MDD

P.S. If this card isn't good for any of this, what card can you all recommend? I'd be looking for something easy on the wallet, yet not cheap and underpowered.

AMD Radeon HD7950 dies after ten minutes/crash report

$

Today I received my AMD Radeon HD 7950 (flashed for Mac), for my 3,1 Mac Pro (2008). It works brilliantly for about ten minutes of either gaming or stress testing, but then crashes the system; screen goes black and sound stutters, then nothing (although I can still hear hard drives being written for a minute or so). When I restart, the card will initially work, but crash as soon as it is tested in any way. Stress tests (Geek3d and Heaven) will make it crash immediately, as will gaming. Only if I let the card 'cool down' for a while will it work again for ten minutes or so - I can do the stress tests at this time too, and all seems well. (albeit that in Heaven/ Extreme I only get around 20fps, vs. barefeats who post 38.7 - is this normal?).

I put 'cool down' in inverted comma's because I'm not sure that heat is the issue after such a short amount of time. The card doesn't feel particularly hot to the touch (I'm not sure I can read temps on a 3,1, Heaven says cpu temp is 30 - is that in fact the gpu temp?) and fans run normally, too.

I'm confused as to why it works for a while, and then goes bad...

No crashes with my NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT.

Could it be a RAM issue (mine is old, 12Gb only and soon to be replaced)?

Mac Pro 3,1 2008
2.8Ghz x2 Quad
10.9.5
Sonnet Pro Plus with Raid0 boot drive
12Gb RAM

This is my crash report - any help gratefully received

No Apple Hardware Test Available

I received my 5.1 2009 3.46GHz twelve core Mac Pro from a seller on eBay and want to run the Apple hardware test but I can't bring it up by holding down the D key or the option-D key either.

It looks like the Recovery volume is locked.

I'm running OSX 10.9.3

I guess I'll try doing a OS restore first and then a upgrade to Yosemite.

Mac Pro 5,1/OWC Accelsior E2 boot speed

Hi

I’m using a Mac Pro with an Accelsior E2 as boot drive. Initially on 10.8.5 Mountain Lion and now on Yosemite 10.10.1. Boot time was almost instantaneous on ML and is now noticeably slower on Yosemite.

Can any other users with the same set up confirm this for me please? Is this normal? I’m not running Trim Enabler.

Thanks.

Mac Pro 2009 processor upgrade went wrong

Hi,

I wanted to upgrade my early 2009 Mac Pro 8 Core to a 12 Core with Firmware 5.1 upgrade.

Like the guy on this thread i got almost the same Problem.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2800/u...lem-mac-pro/11

after i changed the cpus i get a red light near the CPU A socket near dimm slots and a CPU A Temperature Overheat warning LED.
after i remove the CPU_A heatsink i saw some bended pins hurray!
So it looks like i killed the processor board. but what happend to cpus is it killed too or how can i know that its shorted or something.
Has anyone some advice or experience with those problems?

Can't turn wi-fi on [new Mac Pro ; Yosemite]

I have a nMP (6-core), it's not even 6 months old. Recently, everyday this happens: the wi-fi turns itself off, and it's impossible to turn it back on without restarting the machine. I know some people have wi-fi issues on Yosemite, but I never read this being one of them.

I don't know if this is a Mac Pro or a Yosemite problem, for some people it's hardware, and they had to replace the wi-fi card, but I also read someone fixed it simply by turning off 'wake for network access' on Energy Saver preference, maybe it can even be fixed with an update.

Does anyone here have any input on this? Any similar experience or just knowledge about this situation would be greatly appreciated

Mountain Lion on Mac Pro 1.1 2006

I'm interested in running Mountain Lion on my 2006 Mac Pro. Do I have to upgrade my NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB video card to a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB or similar to do this or can it wait until after? Can anyone give me the best and easiest way I'm only interested in ML right now no need for yosemite!

My plan is to get a fresh HD and put it where my SL drive is now, order ML disc from Apple and install that way. Will this eliminate the need for an additional install drive?

Processor 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 13 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB

First time here can someone just provide me a link to a post on the subject it's no doubt been discussed before.

2009 mac pro: RAM not being recognized

$

I got some RAM in the mail today. x2 4GB modules from OWC. Previously my memory setup was x2 4GB modules from OWC, and x6 of the 1GB modules that came with the mac.

For some reason, after I installed the new RAM, one of the older 4GB modules is no longer being recognized. The top right slot is listed as empty when I check "about this mac"

I already tried taking the RAM out and putting it back in....

Any advice?

Edit: I tried swapping the placement of the old OWC modules with the new OWC modules and now it's reading everything properly. Ugh. What the hell was that about?

Some help needed

I have a 2012 Mac Pro ( last of the towers) configured as such

3.33 6 core processor, 16 gig of RAM and the ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card with 1 gig of RAM

Three internal hard drives, OS and applications on a 500 gig Solid state drive

Data on a 1 Tb conventional drive and back up on a 2tb drive

My question is it appears that the graphics card is the short straw in this unit. By the way Apple just replaced under warranty.

the monitor is a 30 in Apple Cinema display and even though it is the latest version it is still basically 5 years old and no longer supported.

so do I get a new monitor and perhaps graphics card that is comparable and has more memory OR do I retire this and go with the new iMac

My uses are, besides web searching, email and word processing, Photoshop, Final cut Pro and Aperture. i also have indesign on the computer and would like to learn it. Looking of advice, Thanks for the help

----------

I should add that one other item that is in the solution equation is that if I went with the iMac I would reduce the number and size of boxes on my desk

Just finished setting up fusion drive and used SuperDuper to clone my HDD to fusion drive.
I am able to boot with fusion drive but there is no recovery partition in fusion drive, obviously there is one on my HDD which I am going to format.

What is best way to get recovery partition in fusion drive?

R9 280X to drive two P2715Q 4k monitors?

$

Has anyone tried to drive two 4k screens with a 280X?

I have a 5.1 with a non-flashed MSI R9 280X 3GB. It has two MiniDisplay ports.

The Dell P2715Q is a $699 UHD monitor that checks these boxes:
  • 60Hz
  • IPS technology
  • SST panel
  • 99% sRGB and around 75% Adobe

I'd probably default to a higher end monitor, but the price/performance ratio seems good here. And most reviews are positive. Nice way to save some money with a two monitor setup.

Mac Pro 4.1 (Worth Upgrading?)

Ok,

First of all I know everyones needs are different but I am looking to see if people think this system is worth upgrading of if I should cut my losses and buy something new

First, Most of the work I do is Photo/Video and involves a lot of storage so I was put off the nMP as I am not a great fan of external storage

Current System is

Mac Pro 4.1 (5.1 Firmware) 2.66 Quad Core 16Gb
Boot Drive is an OWC 480Gb PCIe Blade in PCI2
I also have a 3Tb Working File & Backup HDD in the Spare 5.25" Bay

Main Storage is on 4x4Tb HDDs in Trays 1 to 4

Unit works perfectly and has never missed a beat.

I have been offered a W3680 6 Core 3.33Ghz CPU for £130 and also a GTX750Ti for running my 4k Monitor for £90

Do you think its going to be worth throwing another £200 odd at this machine to try to squeeze another couple of years out of it

Or would I be better off selling it now while the 4.1 Prices are still not at rock bottom, an either

a: Looking for a Maxed out 12 Core 5.1
b: biting the bullet and building a cheaper but faster PC Workstation based around the i7 5930k

I am just worried that throwing more money at a 5 year old MacPro that is always going to be limited to PCIx2 etc is a fools errand in the long run!

Early 2009 Mac Pro, affordable upgrades?

i recently bought an early 2009 model for a good price. It has the 2.66 cpu, 8gb ram (4x2), 640gb hd, GeForce GT 120.

I was thinking of buying some ram, maybe 16gb. Also a more modern Nvidia card. Possibly a 256gb ssd.

It seems that would make it passable for what I do : World of Warcraft, web, light video, music, animation.

I figure the upgrades would cost me about $400.

Keep it, upgrade it, sell it or gut it? Thoughts?

Mac Pro 4.1 Dual CPU Upgrade - Don't do it!

Don't be tempted.
Massively regretting my decision TBH.
I Have a dual 2.26 Octo and purchased 2 x Intel XEON X5670 hexa core to turn it into a 12 core monster.
Haven't fried a board, haven't broken a processor, but haven't made it work either. Must have spent 30 hours trying over the last 3 days and am now just weary.
It just seems to be pot luck as to what 'works' - no pattern to it at all.
Have placed and replaced processors about 20 or 30 times now, but CPU B for me won't work at all.
Tried swapping the chips over from A - B...same result.
Put my original chips back...CPU B works, CPU A now won't work - WTF!
Honestly it's just not worth the hassle.
I've started over and have done incremental tightening of the CPU's in what would be 5 minute segments on a clock - still no nearer to success.
Single CPU's upgrades are fine but Dual CPU's.
I think the difference between those who have been successful and those who haven't is nothing more than serendipity!
Had my first CPU installed up and running inside 30 minutes, the 2nd CPU well still trying after 3 days (sigh).
So heed my warning. On a Dual CPU 4.1 Mac Pro..DON'T BOTHER!
Keep your sanity.
