What's the best way to dry-clean a 2013 Mac Pro? Mine's gathered a bit of dust over the last couple of months and I was wondering what would be the preferred method of keeping it looking new and less dusty.

Any help with this is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

2009 Mac Pro Question

I have two 2009 Mac Pro's and one of my processors went out and apparently it took the processor board with it. I can boot the system off processor A but not processor B. When i took out the processor board the cpu was missing a few pads and smelt burnt. I'm not sure what happened, but long story short ive recently been looking up the CPU upgrades to 12 cores and picked up two Xenon 5670's.

Now the only issue im having is finding a replacement board. I found the part number 661-4998, but that didnt help much since i just found out apple wont sell me the part. I asked my local apple store how much it would cost for the board and they told me that they'd have to install it and it couldnt give me a price quote until i brought the machine in. I tried to explain that i live 40 mins away and i cant just go home and come back while lugging that heavy machine through the mall. All i wanted was a price quote and he told me that its apple's policy and there is nothing he could do. At this point iw as pretty angry and left. This experience has definitely made me rethink all future apple purchases considering i currently 2 macbook pro's, 2 mac pro's and a new top of the line 27" Imac.

The prices online for that board are upwords of $450 and since its 2014 i would have thought it to be a tad cheaper, but i guess not. I Just wish i knew apples price because that would at least give me an idea if i should pay them or buy it online. Has anyone here taken their computer in for a Processor board replacement? If so what was your final cost?

I figured that if i have to buy the board online i might as well pay more and get the 2010 version. I can move my working tray to my bad computer for the firmware hack, but will this actually allow me to use the 2010 board?

I've done alot of searching but i couldnt find the answer, the most i found was references to needing the 2010 firmware, but those threads were old and probably long before the firmware hack, but i wanted to confirm before i buy a 661-5708 tray on whether or not this would work. If id be happy to wait for one to show up on ebay with everything needed to slide it in, heat sinks and all.

Thanks

User on external RAID - not supported, say Apple

Hi Everyone,

[I wasn't sure of the location to put this thread, but as nearly everyone who has a user on an external RAID will be using a MacPro, i thought this the best place.]

So the Q: My user is on an external RAID box (Areca 8050) which is great, and meets my needs. However, i had one of the discs fail, and once i'd replaced it, the OS wouldn't recognise my user, and that ended up causing me a lot of grief.

When i contacted Apple for support, they told me that OS X doesn't support having a user on an external RAID. An external disc - yes; but external RAID - no.

Is this the experience of others?
Is there an easy way to transfer a user back onto the main HD, minus all the data that i'd like to keep on the RAID?

Many thanks in advance :)

USB 3.1 coverage at CES

Help needed please!

So all of a sudden, I simultaneously lost today:
-front USB functionality, completely (can't see any USB volume; no working mouse or keyboard either)
-rear USB functionality, partially (can't see any USB volume, but keyboard/mouse work)
-bluetooth: not available. I used to use my trackpad, luckily I could find an old mouse to work with;
-and above all, no starting volume choice possible with ALT key. No EFI boot accordingly. Keeps restarting on my Master volume: no volume to choose to start from.

I have the Inateck KT4004 USB3 card installed which works very well, this is a good point. I could also find a Bluetooth dongle. But what bothers me, it's that I can't choose my starting volume (which behaves normally in Disk Utility). Tried another keyboard: same thing.

Any idea on how to deal with is very welcome. Thanks in advance.

Mac Pro 3,1 SSD & Yosemite

Hi, thinking about upgrading my Mac Pro 3,1 some more. Want to get an SSD Drive and was interested in the 500gb Crucial MX100 but from what I've read Yosemite and 3rd party drives aren't really working together with TRIM unless you disable kext which I would rather not. I am aware that the OWC drives work on their own but the price point for the 480gb is higher than I'd like to spend. I was reading that the Crucial drives have their own garbage collection but not sure this is the same thing. In any case, wondering what options are available or what people are doing in regard to 3rd party SSDs and Yosemite.

Need some Advice

Hey,

I am strongly considering getting a 12 Core 2013 nMP and would like some advice from the knowledgable members on here.

I am leaning towards getting a 2.7 GHz 12 Core with 32GB RAM and 512 GB SSD dual D700s. I do some video editing and photo editing but mainly I would be buying this for 3D work I am doing (as a student) in The Foundry's Modo. And from past experience with my current Mac Pro I know that rendering on a 12 Core is much faster than on the lower core count models.

I will be asking my dad to lease it for me through his company so I figure it's best I don't mess with upgrades I could have done to save a buck.

So I would appreciate if anyone has any advice on if thesis the correct spec I should be looking at?

I will be using my Old MP to render things, both animation and jewelry Stills for work.

Also since the internal storage on an nMP is very limited what would everyone on here suggest for additional storage (I don't need any crazy 750 MB/s transfer rates but I am hoping to find a 4 - 8 TB external Thunderbolt solution at a reasonable price)

Lastly I am looking at replacing my 24 in Cinema Display and buying a 4K VESA display to go along with my a new MP. Would anyone have any suggestions for the best IPS 4K panel at around 1000-1200 dollars?

Thanks in advance

No boot after PRAM reset 06 MP Yosem

$

I have 2006 Mac Pro desktop that will not boot after PRAM reset.
Symptoms started this week with Apple Trackpad going bonkers. No multi-touch gestures. Barely right click. Sometimes cursor jumped all over screen. I thought it was the batteries in the trackpad, it wasn't. Thought the trackpad was going bad... possible, but doubtful. Plugged in a wired magic mouse and tried resetting PRAMs since I read that might fix the trackpad problem.
After PRAM reset... no reboot. Not in recovery mode, target disk mode, safe mode, verbose mode. Tried them all.
I am running a 06 MP hacked with Yosemite, but it has worked flawlessly for months.
Possible logic board issue? I was reading about the logic board battery. It is 8 years old after all.
Any thoughts to force a reboot?

thanks.

I installed FakeSMC on my 4,1 in order to get the GPU temperature.

I am now able to get the info I want, plus the CPU temperatures / frequencies for each core. However, I lost the fan speed reading.

Attachment 523632 Attachment 523631

So far, I only installed

1) FakeSMC.kext
2) IntelCPUMonitor.kext
3) RadeonMonitor.kext

Is there any body know how to get back the fan speed reading?

Thank you Netkas for providing us such a great tool!

Purchased Mac Pro 2,1 and need advice on repair

$

Good morning all,

I was able to buy a 2007 "8-core" Mac Pro 3.0 GHz from a guy on Craigslist for only $80. Of course, there's a catch--the system has no ram or hard drives and is not guaranteed to be functional.

Luckily, the diagnostic LEDs 2 through 5, which would indicate a problem with the CPUs, remained off when the DIAG_LED button was pressed. The lights for trickle power and power supply were appropriately lit as well.

So, I so far have a case, a good power supply, a graphics card, and good CPUs and logic board (?).

I powered on the system with no ram and it flashed the power LED on the front indefinitely, which I understood to signify that the system couldn't boot due to a lack of RAM. I'd also purchased some no-name FB-DIMMs from Fry's to test it out--the Mac seemed to not even recognize they were there when I installed them, continuing to flash all the red LEDs on the RAM caddies when powering on.

Here are the DIMMs I tried:

http://www.frys.com/product/7963870?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

So, finally, here are my questions:

Is it more likely that the RAM is bad or incompatible or that the RAM caddy itself has a faulty connection? I'm suspicious of the fact that the RAM was stripped at all--the seller said the Mac was from his office, but why would it have been stripped in such a way unless there was something wrong with the logic board?

Which brings me to my next question: if I was able to get positive feedback from the diagnostic LEDs, does that mean that I can rule out the logic board being bad?

Any other advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has extra Mac Pro drive caddies they'd be willing to sell me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Bad Time to Buy REFURBISHED Mac Pro?

I am saving up for a refurbished Mac Pro (would purchase in a couple months). Mac Rumors says not to buy a new one because they are at the end of their cycle. However, it took awhile before the apple store had refurbished models for sale.

While it would probably be a bad time to buy a new Mac Pro, is it also a bad time to buy a refurbished one? Also, do refurbished prices drop when a new model is released?

Figured I would see peoples thoughts before I pulled the trigger on that purchase :-)

PS: Model would be

2TB OWC Aura SSD in old Mac Pro?

https://eshop.macsales.com/preorder/...D-for-Mac-Pro/

Seems the Aura is the only 2TB SSD option right now, but its for the new Mac Pro.

(1) Is there some PCI card adapter that can use the new Mac Pro SSD memory stick format?

(2) and, most importantly, would such a PCI adapter card be able to boot an old Mac Pro with the new mac pro SSD stick in it?

I seem to remember some folks found one, but some quick searches didn't reveal it.

(3) Has anyone tried this with an early aura card? Seems like it would make a decent upgrade.

Mac Pro Graphics Card Upgrade

$

My current Mac Pro is in need of a graphics card upgrade. The computer will be used for 2D/3D CADD and word processing type software. AutoCAD for Mac version lists Radeon 5870 as the only certified (not recommended) card; however, on the Windows side, there is a long list of Quadro cards which are certified and recommended. From this list, the Quadro 4000 has a Mac version and should work well for 2D projects with either Windows or Mac OS. Also, I want to add a second card for more graphic intense projects, such as, Quadro 5000 or GTX 660 card. The cards use one power cable (each) and have a combined power consumption of less 300 Watts. A Quadro K5000 is on the wish list but not in the budget. My questions are as follows:

From these parameters, are there other cards which I should consider?
By installing two cards, will this create problems for the processing of data?
Should the cards be matching pairs (2-4000, 2-5000 or 2-660) for better performance and fewer possible problems?
Could a card be used for one drive or software?
When two graphics cards are installed, is this similar to a dual processor with data being channelled through each card as space becomes available to complete the task? Is it then sent to the monitor? If there is one monitor, is the data redirected to it?

The many postings have been helpful to reduce the number of questions; however, these questions, some far, I have not been able to find an answer. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you for your assistance.

My computer System is:

THANK GOD for CCC and back ups

Last night I had completed my dual 250GB samsung EVO 840's on a Sonnet Tempo card in RAID 0 striped config, a 2TB RAID 0 set up on some WD black HDD and was feeling pretty happy, got my Samsung U28U590D 4K screen working and all was well.

Tried to install a fresh version of Autodesk Smoke and it wouldn't let me, kept saying there was the application already installed... searched and found a number of hits in the:

~usr/bin directory...

well, it just so happens that if you delete the ~usr folder, the whole world falls apart  (being over dramatic) well, that was interesting... I had completely buggered my system, wouldn't shut down, wouldn't boot, wouldn't boot off of the recovery disc, wouldn't go into recovery nothing just a mac symbol and loading bar...

DAMMIT

I remembered I had an old SATA 2 SSD knocking about with mavericks on which was cloned with CCC before I upgraded to Yosemite, so I whipped out all of the drives and put the old SSD in, after a while success it booted into mavericks and from there I was able to reinstall a fresh copy of OS X 10.10 onto the RAID 0 PCIe SSD's and I was back to where I was 24 hours ago...

Long story short, it always pays to have a copy of a bootable OS handy if you are a novice...
