First off, here are the specs of my machine:
Mac Pro 3,1
2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Xeon processors
14GB RAM
ATI 5870
Dual 24" monitors
Sometime last year, I made a sorely needed upgrade to the 5870 currently running in my comp, but recently decided to switch from FCP to Premiere 6. Why? Well, every other media processing app I use is in the Adobe suite anyway, so I figured, to make things easy, I might as well round out the field by going Adobe all the way through.
Anyway, I'd really like to access the CUDA capabilities, so it just makes sense to switch to a more powerful card. I had all but made up my mind I was gonna go for the 660ti until I read Xeocon's thread, and now I'm torn on whether to shell out another hundo for the 670. Keep in mind, I do very little gaming, and this transition is more for media production, so I'm not sure the price difference is really all that justifiable. But I don't know. You tell me.
Anyway, apart from the decision of 660ti vs 670, I just want to be sure that I'm correct in my understanding that I can go buy a card (i.e. MSI 660ti), and as long I'm running 10.8.2, and install the drivers for the card as well as CUDA, it should just be plug and play (with loss of boot screen, or course).
From that point, I'm curious if there's any good reason I should keep the 5870, because I'd like to sell it in order to offset the cost of the new GTX.
Thanks so much!
